Helen Luticia Maute Evans, age 80, born in Jackson, MS on July 27, 1933, died on July 6 at her home surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her parents, William Curtis Maute and Virginia Cook Maute; her husband, James (Jim) Edward Evans II and her brother, William(Bill) C. Maute, Jr. She is survived by her children: James(Jim) E. Evans III of Columbus, Virginia Hardy Branch (Bill) of Houston, TX and William Bennett Evans (Heather) of Starkville. Grandchildren include: William (Harrison) Branch, Sarah Branch, Adaline Evans and step- granddaughter Caitlin Harter Dampier(Mike) of Oxford. Helen graduated from Central High School in Jackson, MS in 1951 where she was actively involved in school life; campus favorite, Sr. Class Secretary, ROTC sponsor, cheerleader and Sr. Homecoming Maid. She received a BA in Art Education in 1955 at MS State College for Women. She was on the Presidents Council, Editor of the College Yearbook, Member of Lockhearts, Black List, Hottentots and Whos Who in American Colleges and Universities. It was in college that she met and married Jim in 1955. They were married for 58 years and traveled extensively together until his death in 2013. Helen was an active member of the community; DAR, Jr. Auxilary, Garden Club treasurer for 30 years, President of St. Pauls Episcopal Church Altar Guild and St. Annes Guild, pilgrimage (Sunnyside) homeowner for 15 years. She also volunteered at St.Pauls Bible School, Sunday School, church office, Meals-on-Wheels and Contact Help Line. She was a Den mother and President of Demonstration School PTA. First and foremost, she was a loving mother and wife and will be dearly missed. Graveside services will be held for family Wednesday July 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Aberdeen. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Pauls Altar Guild or choir (318 College Street, Columbus, MS 39701) or to Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society P.O. Box 85 Columbus, MS 39703.
