Mrs. Joe O. Sams, Sr. Elona Mendrop Sams age 91 died May 9, 2009 at the Windsor in Columbus. Mrs. Sams was born on January 19, 1918 in Hollendale, Mississippi to the late Eldon Richard and Beulah Irene Golden Mendrop. Services will be held Tuesday May 12, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior at the funeral home. Mrs. Sams was a life-long teacher. She was Librarian at Franklin Academy from 1964-1979. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was member and president of her Sunday School Class, Stephen D. Lee Chapter 34 of UDC, Peyton Study Club and Flora Pena Garden Club, and member of Thimble Ten Sewing Club. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husbands Robert Harold Jackson and Joe O. Sams, Sr. Survivors include two children, Bob Jackson (Jennie) of Weatherford, Texas, and Golden Jackson-Mergler (Norwin) of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Lee Anne Jackson, Sarah E. Jackson, Eldon Mergler, and Samuel Mergler; and two great-grandchildren, Peyton Cole and Bryce Cole. She is also survived by her brother, Richard G. Mendrop (Tina) of Colorado Springs and Mesa, Arizona, and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to First Baptist Church P.O. Box 829 Columbus, MS 39703.
