HAMPTON COUCHMAN JR. BIRMINGHAM - Edward Hampton Hank Couchman Jr., 81, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. Services will be held Saturday May 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Joel Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday May 15, 2009 from 6 until 8 at the funeral home. Mr. Couchman was born July 6, 1927 in Columbus to the late Edward Hampton and Minette Townsend Couchman Sr., and lived most of his life there. He was a 1949 graduate of the University of Alabama. He retired from Merchants and Farmers Bank (now Trustmark) in 1989 after 40 years. He was a long-time member of the East Columbus church of Christ, and served the congregation as an elder for more than 30 years. For the past three years he had been a member of the Cahaba Heights Church of Christ in Birmingham. He was active in civic and youth recreational programs in Columbus for many years. Mr. Couchman is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Janet Pickett Couchman; three sons, Tom Couchman (Charlotte) of Denver, CO; Bill Couchman (Melinda) and Bo Couchman (Teresa) of Birmingham; two daughters, Judy Smiley (Mike) of Alexandria, VA, and Liza Dyer (John) of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren, and three nieces. Pallbearers will be grandsons Nicholas Couchman, Zach Couchman, Andrew Couchman, Will Couchman, Curt Couchman, Jonathan Smiley, David Felman, and Greg Wiggins (grandson-in-law). Honorary pallbearers will be Jay McCrary, Clyde Hollis, Gary Murray, Steve Coburn, David Haynes Jr., Frank Griffin III, A.J. Steverson, and Terry Thomas. Burial will be at Friendship Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home of Columbus is in charge of arrangements.
