Roy Lee Atkins, age 85, died Saturday, February 9, 2013 at his home in Columbus. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside services, with Rev. Jim L.E. Atkins officiating, will be Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Vaughn Cemetery. The son of the late Samuel Martin and Ursula Jane Shelton Atkins, Mr. Atkins was born November 11, 1927 in Steens, MS. A veteran, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Brookshires Dairy as a delivery driver and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Ellena Jane Hixson, brothers Thurston, Lloyd, and Troy Atkins, his sister Daisy Bounds and his wife of 66 years Helen Louise Hodges Atkins. He is survived by his son Samuel Lee Atkins (Karen), Byram, MS, his daughters Dorothy Threadgill, Maben, MS and Royce Ann Butler and Mary Wood, both of Columbus, and his brother Douglas Atkins (Caroline), Austin, TX. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
