Douglas Howton

Raymond Douglas Doug Howton died Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at DCH Hospital in Northport, AL at the age of seventy-eight. Born in Caledonia, MS, Mr. Howton attended Caledonia High School and worked thirty-six years as a route salesman for Brookshires Dairy and Dairy Fresh Corporation in Columbus. He was a life-long resident of the Caledonia area and had lived for more than fifty years at his home in Kolola Springs. He was a member of Kolola Springs Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening, listening to gospel music, watching game shows and professional wrestling on TV, and spending time with his family. In the years after his retirement, he especially enjoyed sitting in his front-yard swing, talking with his friends and waving to passing motorist. Mr. Howton was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Ellis Howton and Ozell Blakney Howton, as well as, his infant daughter, Kay Lisa Howton. Survivors include his son, Mel Howton (Annette) of Ethelsville, AL; three daughters, Nancy Nenneau (Rick), Angela Laster (David), and Susan McIntyre, all of Caledonia; two brothers, Harold Howton (Virginia) of Caledonia, and Robert Ed Howton (Anne) of Cottondale, AL, and one sister, Diane Howton Asadi (Jalal) of Caledonia. Additionally, Mr. Howton is survived by ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his good friends and neighbors, Mr. Vic and Mrs. Bobbie Stephens, as well as, a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at Memorial Funeral Home with Memorial's staff directing and Rev. Mel Howton and Dr. Rick Nenneau officiating. Visitation with the family will be at the funeral home from noon until 2:00 PM with his service beginning at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Seth Laster, Dustin Goley, John Laster, Jordy Howton, Collin McIntyre, Chaz McIntyre, Hunter Nenneau, and his great-grandson, Maddox Gingell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Vic Stephens, Joe King, Jack Schamel, Bennie Perrigin, James Bubba McIntyre, Bradley Howton, friends and neighbors from the Kolola Springs Community, and all former employees of Brookshires Dairy and Dairy Fresh Corporation. The family would like to thank the staff of Baptist Memorial Hospital, Golden Triangle and the staff of DCH Northport, AL Medical Center for their excellent care and compassion during his last days.
