Sylvia Hunter Vaughan, 71, passed away on April 16, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in Columbus, MS. Services will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 2:00 pm with Father James Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 18, 2007 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Mrs. Vaughan was born on April 18, 1935 in Columbus, Mississippi to the late William Gilbert and Maxine Trull Hunter. She was a communicate of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, a 1953 graduate of S.D. Lee High School, a 1957 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Ole Miss where she was a former president of Delta Gamma Sorority. She was a life member of the Junior Auxiliary of Columbus. She was a member of the Columbus Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a Rotary Benefactor. She served on several committees and was formerly editor of the Rotary District Directory. Also a member of Milady Garden Club, member and past president of Magnolia Garden Club, member and past president of the Northeast MS Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter, a member of Magowah Gun Club and served on the board of the Lowndes County Library. Mrs. Vaughan was the Mississippi Director to the National Beer Wholesalers Association from 1985 to 1988. She was also actively involved in Safari Club International and the Dallas Safari Club. She hunted in Africa and Europe on ten safaris and fished in Argentina, Chile, and Alaska with her longtime companion Willis N. Puckett II. While on safari in Bulgaria, Sylvia killed a gold medal Red Stag, and has had three of her African trophies listed in the Roland Ward Record Book of Big Game. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Francis Marion Vaughan III. Mrs. Vaughan was survived by her daughter; Louise Vaughan Cunningham (Greg) of Atlanta, GA, son; Francis Marion Bill Vaughan and his fiancee Ashley Carroll of Columbus, MS; sisters-in-law, Dai Wilson of Columbus, Jenny Russ of Houston, TX, and Sarah Travis of Montgomery, AL; brother-in-law, Lloyd Vaughan of Columbus; granddaughters, Mary Hunter Cunningham and Kate Cunningham both of Atlanta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Mike Waters, Michael Waters, Ine Waters, M.L. Waters, David Waters, Steve Hardin, Led Vaughan, Scott Berry, Arthur Fitzner and Dr. John Fields. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Cash, and the former employees of Hunter Distributing Company.
