Mr. Doyel Phelps, 84, died at his home in Meridian, Mississippi on Sunday, January 27, 2013. Services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus, Mississippi with Reverend Kenneth Boudreau officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held Thursday January 31, 2013, at Memorial Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Mr. Phelps was born on August 18, 1928 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi to the late James Melvin Phelps, Sr. and Ada Betts Phelps At the time of his death he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Meridian, Mississippi and was a former longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Columbus, Mississippi where he faithfully served as a church officer, general handyman and groundskeeper. Mr. Phelps served 27 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as Senior Master Sergent in 1973. He was a decorated Viet Nam veteran. Following his retirement, he settled in Columbus, Mississippi where he was employed by Blazon Flexible Flier in West Point, Mississippi and at Columbus Air Force Base in civil service. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers: Jethro Phelps, James A. Phelps, Hoyle Phelps and Felix Phelps; 4 sisters: Evelyn Fondren, Eva Mae Fondren, Christine Burdine and Orene Grimsley. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary J. Clark Phelps of Meridian, Mississippi, formerly of Clinton County, Illinois; his 4 children: Doyel Keith Phelps and his wife, Dreama, of Odin, Illinois; Lynn Phelps Florreich, her husband, Dennis, of Meridian, Mississippi and their children, Jared (KayCee) Florreich, of Arlington, Texas and Ryan (Catherine), of Jackson, Mississippi; Karen Phelps Boring, her husband, Joe, and their children, Caitlin Boring and Caleb Boring, all of Anderson, South Carolina; and Kevin Alan Phelps, his wife, Heather, and their children, Kendall Phelps, Clark Phelps, Kara Phelps and Kinsey Phelps, all of Midlothian, Virginia. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild, Bryce Allen Florreich in February. He is also survived by two brothers: Melvin James Phelps, Jr. and James E. Phelps; and 3 sisters: Oline Bell, Mildred Busby and Mamie Jordan. Serving as Pallbearers will be Jared Florreich, Ryan Florreich, Clark Phelps, Caleb Boring, Jay B. Phelps, Carl Barnett Phelps, Wayne Bell, Ronald Clark In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to: Trinity Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choice.
