Douglas Dean Hunter, 83, of Columbus, MS died Friday, June 4, 2010, at the G.V. "Sonny" Mongomery VA Medical Center Hospice in Jackson, Ms. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Memorial Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Services will be Wednesday, June 9 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Memorial Funeral Home with Brother Aaron Parker officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at the Arbor Grove Cemetery, near Houston, Ms. Born Tuesday, August 17, 1926 in Columbus, MS, he was the son of the late Joe William and the late Drucilla Marsh Hunter. He was a loving, faithful husband of 64 years to his wife Faye Nell Callahan Hunter, who died in Apri, 2009. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by his brother William E. Hunter and his sister Marie Lomenick. He was also a loving father, brother and grandfather who always tried to plan for his family's future even up until his last few days here on earth. He had a great sense of humor like no one else. We never knew what what to expect from him because we didn't know whether or not he was being serious or joking. He kept up with current events, politics, and sports, which everyone who came in contact with him knew. He loved his entire family. He would always see that everyone was taken care of. He loved golfing, and fishing until he was no longer able to do. He was a great man, loved by many. He will be greatly missed. Mr. Hunter was drafted into the US Army during World War II and served in Germany immediately after Germany surrendered. He was awarded the Bronze Star by the US Army for valor beyond the call of duty. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1952 during the Korean Conflict and retired with the rank of Tech Sgt. in 1972. He served one tour of duty in Vietnam as an intelligence agent for the Air Force OSI. He is survived by his son, Douglas D. Hunter, Jr. of Cody, WY, daughter, Kathy Brewer (Al) of Meridian, MS, sister, Evelyn Hunter Martin ( John) of Florence, MS, grandchildren Coby Hutchinson of Columbus, Candice Hunter Kennedy of KY, Angela Hunter Jackson of NE, and Shannon Williams Derrick of Pulaski, MS and 5 great grandchldren. Pallbearers will be Jim Newell, Jeff Carver, Rance House, Al Hunter, Reggie Callahan and Mark Walls. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society,1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, MS 39213.
