Mrs. Paz Aimee Vazquez-Guerra Whitehead, age 93, of Columbus died Sunday, August 16, 2009 at her daughter's home in Hattiesburg, Ms. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Jearl Hunley officiating, with burial immediately following at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, MS. Visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Mrs. Whitehead was born on Thursday, June 15, 1916 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to the late Elias and Aurelia Guerra Vazquez. She was a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, from which she recieved a B.A. degree, and she recieved a M.A. degree from MSU. After teaching for approximtely 7 years in Puerto Rico, she began a thirty-three teaching career with the Columbus Municipal School District. She started the Spanish-speaking program at Franklin Academy and later taught this program in all the city elementary schools. For many years she taught Spanish at S.D. Lee High School and retired in 1986. She was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, and she also attended First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her daughter, Annie Richardson of Hattiesburg and two sons William Whitehead, Jr. ( Mary) and Walter Whitehead, both of Houston, TX and one sister Carmen Guerra of San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is also survived by five (5)grandchildren Schattzi Whitehead, Rob Richardson (Nan), Billy Whitehead, Aimee Richardson Carroll (Austin), and Whitney Michelle Whitehead and two (2) great grandchildren Kori Hawkins and Parker Cole Whitehead. Family members will be pallbearers.
