Samuel Harvey Sam Kaye, age 72, of Columbus passed away Tuesday January 1, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Columbus. Services will be held Saturday January 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pauls Episcopal Church; burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday January 5, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church. The son of the late James B. Kaye and Louise Harvey Kaye, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Cummings Kaye. Mr. Kaye was born September 27, 1940 in Columbia, SC. He graduated from S.D. Lee High School in 1958. He was a 1963 graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was commissioned into the US Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1963. He was an Eagle Scout and lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts. He was a lifelong member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Columbus, MS where he served on the Vestry. Mr. Kaye spent several years in Memphis where he was a principal in the firm of Walk, Jones and Francis Mah, Inc. In 1974 he moved to Columbus, MS where he operated his practice for over 30 years. Since 1976, he worked with Downtown Columbus Unlimited, which became Main Street Columbus in 1984, which lead to the creation of the Mississippi Main Street Association, where he was an Emeritus. As a member of the American Institute of Architects, he served as President in 1979. He was a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where he served as Advisor, 1989 " 1998 and Advisor Emeritus 1999 " present. In 1992 as a member of the National Trust he helped establish the Mississippi Heritage Trust where he was the chairman of the Steering Committee and Charter President from 1992"2003. He was President of the Review Board for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. He received numerous awards for his work, the 2010 Columbus Main Street Sam Kaye Award for Design Excellence, the 2012 MS Heritage Trust Al and Libby Hollingsworth Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2012 MS Historical Society Award of Merit, the 2012 Dream 365 Unsung Hero Award and many other awards for his work. He was an architectural advisor of the Stephen D. Lee Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of the Columbus-Lowndes Fair Association. He was the 2011 & 2012 Grand Marshall of the Main Street Columbus Christmas Parade. He was a member of the Rotary Club. He was a Board Member of the Salvation Army and the Greater Columbus Learning Center. He was a member of the Town and Tower Club. He was a prolific writer of local history, articles and a book. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Burns Kaye, of Columbus and three daughters Kimbellee Kaye Hinson (David) of Troy, AL, Elizabeth Kaye Bell (Chad) of Columbus, MS, Mary Catherine Kaye Bosler (Tim) of Evansville, IN, stepdaughter Jessica Neault Hartman of Columbus and ten grandchildren and so many others whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorials to the Stephen D. Lee Foundation, 316 7th St N, Columbus, MS 39701, or St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 318 College St., Columbus, MS 39701.
