GENE PETERSON Colonel Eugene Franklin Gene Peterson USAF Ret., age 92 died Sunday, August 19, 2012 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 6:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. Colonel Peterson, called Paka by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born on Friday, March 12, 1920 in Kansas City, KS to the late Herman and Ruth Kiefer Peterson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1940, where he received his Wings as a Flying Sergeant. He served in WWII in the South Pacific as a pilot with the "Jungle Skippers" of the 317th Squadron. After a long and distinguished career in the United State Air Force, he retired to Columbus. He was active member of the Daedalians, an avid golfer, and a member of the Columbus Country Club since 1973. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jane Peterson, and his brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Norma Peterson.
