Carrie was one of four children born to Agnes and Lamar Johnson. Grandma "Carrie", as she was called, graduated from Mashulaville High School in 1943. When her father told her that college was not for girls, she did everything in her power to prove him wrong. She headed off to the University of Alabama where she waited tables to pay her way. At the age of 22, she followed her brothers to California to pursue a career. She met and married Paul Compton in 1952 and was graced with four children. In 1970, her love for the South brought her home to Mississippi where she raised her family. She retired from Columbus Brick after nearly 20 years of service. Carries favorite pastime was sports. She was a tough defender in basketball and fouled out of her fair share of games, although if you ask her, the refs just made bad calls. Her knowledge of college football led to many heated debates between her and the men of her family. She wasnt even above calling on the Lord to help her team win. Her true love, however, was spending time with her grandchildren. She was a very hands-on grandmother. Each of her grandchildren will cherish the memories they have of playing baseball, sleeping on the floor and fishing at the lake. Carrie touched the life of every person that had the pleasure of knowing her. Her children, grandchildren and friends will forever remember her passionate heart for serving the Lord and serving others. It was her lifelong goal to share the gift of salvation with each of her four children and ten grandchildren. Her strong faith, selfless spirit of giving, stubborn determination and sweet smile will continue to inspire everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, Tom Compton.
