Mrs. Atkins was born August 16, 1921, in Empire, AL, and moved to Lowndes County, MS, as an infant. She was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Cora Mae Wood Atkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Floyd "Slim" Atkins.
Mrs. Atkins was a faithful member of Canaan Baptist Church, attending every service and activity as long as her health permitted. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William Earl Wood and Gene Wood, and granddaughters, Tracy Johnson and Gaye McAdams.
Survivors include her son, James Floyd Atkins, Jr. and his wife Verlene of Hartselle, AL, daughters, Reta Burchfield and her husband George of Columbus, MS, Linda Knight and her husband John of Columbus, MS, and Judy Woolbright and her husband Breman of Columbus, MS, 12 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren, and lots of sweet nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be George Burchfield, Jr., Jay Burchfield, Jimmy Atkins, Billy Atkins, Sean Woolbright, Joey McGinnis, Michael Patterson, Shea Woolbright, Caleb Woolbright, and Conner Burchfield. Honorary pallbeaers will Denny Rutherford, Dr. Min Kim, Dr. Michael Boland, Dr. John King and their sweet staffs, and deacons and friends of Canaan Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Canaan Baptist Church, 1008 North Lehmberg Rd., Columbus, MS, 39702. The family would like to give a special thanks to Genteva Hospice and all the sweet ladies of Gateway Commons for daily loving and caring for our mother.
