Doug Jones Melvin Douglas Doug Jones II died Monday, October 27, 2008 at his home in Columbus. Doug was born March 1, 1966, in Beckley, West Virginia, to Melvin and Billie Jones. Doug graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1989. In 2000, he earned a Masters of Science in Management from UAH. He completed part of his Masters requirements at Mississippi State University, where he became highly regarded by the faculty, staff and his peers. While at UAH he was selected Student Government Association President and Most Outstanding Student Leader. He also earned the Outstanding Leadership Scholarship at UAH. Doug settled in Starkville in 1996 when he joined Southwire Company as a Manufacturing Engineer. Though his work ethic, business savvy and leadership he quickly moved up within the company. He was ultimately promoted to Manufacturing Manager of the largest operational unit within Southwire Starkville. In 2002, Doug joined Omnova Solutions in Columbus. Two years later he was named Operations Manager and provided caring leadership for over 250 operators, technicians and supervisors. After serving as captain of his high school baseball team, Doug maintained a passion for baseball in his adult life. He also enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques, and had several beloved pets. He was a generous volunteer and financial donor to the Boy Scout Camp Seminole in Starkville. Doug was preceded in death by his younger brother, David. Following Davids death, Doug took a special interest in his only niece, Casey Jones. In addition to his parents, Doug is survived by his sister-in-law, Deborah Jones, and niece Casey both of Panama City, FL; his aunt Darlene Morris, uncle Gene Hooker, cousin Brian Hooker, Brians wife Marcia and their son, Steven all of Kennewick, WA; his cousin Elizabeth Dunn and her husband Randy of Oreville, CA; and extended family in West Virginia. Doug touched many people in his short life. His legacy of significant achievements is secondary to the lesson he leaves us: its not what you do in life but how you make people feel. A memorial service to celebrate Dougs life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 2, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will be also be at Memorial one hour prior to the service. Dougs final resting place will be alongside his brother, David, at Kent Forest Lawn Cemetery in Panama City, FL. Honorary pallbearers are Kathy Brown, Dick Mahoney, Joe Dillon, Michael Pepper, Nathan Pongetti and special friends from Omnova Solutions and Southwire.
