JAMES R. CARNES James R. Carnes Age 85 died June 30, 2007 at his Residence in Columbus, MS Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Monday, July 2, 2007 at 3:00 PM with Dr. Sam Morris, Rev. Tony Proctor, and Rev. Rev. Ann Russell Bradley Officiating burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery Visitation was held at Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, July 1, 2007 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM James Robert Carnes, age 85, died Saturday afternoon at his home in Columbus. His Funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church Monday July 2, 2007 at 3:00 PM with Dr. Sam Morris, Rev. Tony Proctor and Rev. Anne Russell Bradley officiating . Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery with Memorial Funeral Home directing the services. Visitation was held Sunday from 5:00 PM - 7:00PM at Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Carnes was born August 10, 1921 in Nettleton, Ms, the son of the late James R. and Eva Ballard Carnes. He spent his early years in the coal-mining communities in Jefferson County, Al, and had lived in Columbus since the age of 16. After graduating from S.D. Lee High School, he attended Mississippi State and then answered the call to U.S.Army service in 1941. Serving during World War II, his Signal Corp training with the 236th Signal Service Battalion took him from San Francisco to Calcutta and on to Dibragarth in the foothills of the Himalayas. Returning home after the war, he married Betty June Byrne on June 19, 1948, and joined First United Church, where he was a member for 59 years. Mr. Carnes spent his working life in the hotel business, first at the old , grand Gilmer Hotel and later at the original Holiday Inn. After he retired in 1983, he resumed a lifelong interest in woodcraft, spending many pleasant hours in his shop making things for his family and friends. One light he "hid under the bushel" was his skill at watercolor painting. survivors include: Wife-Betty June (Byrne) Carnes of Columbus, Miss. Son-Jim Carnes of Montgomery, Ala. daughter-in-law-Erin Kellen Carnes of Montgomery, Ala. Granddaughter-Celia Carnes of Montgomery, Ala.
