Catherine Haynes, mother and friend, died at Trinity Health Care Center on Friday January 11, 2013. She was 90 years old. Visitation will be January Friday January 18, 2013 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held in her memory at First Christian Church, 811 N. McCrary Road in Columbus on Saturday, January 19 at 3p.m. Born Catherine Cornelia White in Webster County Mississippi on March 2, 1922, Catherine moved to Columbus during her teens to live with her aunt and uncle, Ada and J. O. Slaughter, owners of the Gilmer Hotel. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1942 and married Army Air Corp Captain Charles Duncan Haynes in 1944. They made their home in Columbus where they raised two children, Chuck and Cathy. Catherine enjoyed life in Columbus where she took an active part in the community. Catherines church family is the congregation of First Christian Church of Columbus where she was a member for 75 years. During her lifetime she was a member of the Columbus Junior Auxiliary, The Daughters of the American Revolution, Cherokee Garden Club and a charter member of the Temple Heights Floral Arranging Society. She served as team mother for the Columbus Swim Association and in the 1960s was Secretary in the Music Department of MSCW where she was faculty advisor to the Gauntlet sorority. Catherine was a skilled member of the American Contract Bridge League and was active in five local bridge clubs until her recent illness. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents Cornelia and Oscar Lee White, her husband Charles Duncan Haynes, Sr. and her brother James Lee White. Catherine leaves behind a legacy of rich friendships and an adoring family which includes children Charles Duncan Haynes, Jr. (Gigi) of Columbus, Catherine Haynes Hatch (Jim) of Bartow, FL; grandchildren Margaret Haynes Howard (Richard) of Signal Mountain, TN, James Duncan Hatch (Sara) of Amelia, OH, Charles Duncan Haynes, lll (Gina) of Money, MS, Sarah Catherine Hatch Robinson of Tarpon Springs, FL and Gabriel Haynes Hatch of Bartow, FL; great "grandchildren Thomas Brevard Howard, Hunter Calhoun Howard, Camden Haynes Howard, Elijah Duncan Hatch, Turner Duncan Haynes and Stella Claire Robinson; niece Dorothy White Gray of Madison and nephew Jimmy White of Clinton. Catherines family commends the caregivers of Trinity Healthcare Center, Dr. Jack Reed, Dr. Brett Brown, Dr. Brad Brown, and Dr. Michael Boland for the care they provided her. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to First Christian Church of Columbus.
