Bertha Mae Pate Stanley went home to eternal life with the Lord on March 13, 2008. She died at Trinity Healthcare Center from complications of Sjgren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that she had for more than 30 years. Services will be held at Memorial Funeral Home Monday, March 17, 2008 at 2:00 PM with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM. Mrs. Stanley will be buried at Friendship Cemetery. Mrs. Stanley was born in Carrollton, AL, in May, 1913. She graduated from high school in Carrollton and entered nursing school at Fite Hospital in 1930. In 1933 she earned her RN degree and continued working at Fite Hospital and then moved to Columbus Hospital. After 25 years of working in home nursing care, she started working as an industrial nurse for Hooker Chemical Co. and retired in 1979 after 20 years of work. She belonged to Lowndes County, National and Industrial Nursing Associations. Mrs. Stanley married the late E. A. Stanley, Jr., on July 11, 1935. She is survived by two sons Earl Alton Stanley, III (Lizz) of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; and William Ellis Stanley (Jardee) of Roseville, CA. Grandchildren include Denise Stanley of Chicago, IL; Earl Stanley, IV, of Orange, CA; Michael Stanley and Brian Stanley of Roseville, CA. Great Granddaughters are Regan and Emma Stanley of Orange, CA, and Holly Pollock of Citrus Heights, CA. She is also survived by sister-in-law Mary Pate of Columbus and sister-in-law Betty Stanley of Dayton, OH; and four nephews Curtis Pate (Dorothy), Dr. Joe Pate (Celia), Dr. Bob Stanley (Carolyn), Dr. David Stanley (Olga); and three nieces Dr. Patty Duffy (Allen), Barbara Ibarra, Linda Inman (John) and several great nieces and two great great nieces as well as several great nephews. Mrs. Stanley was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 60 years and helped to start Love in Deed and Mothers Day Out, where she worked for 14 years. She served as president of Judson Phileathea Sunday School for several years. She loved her church work. Mrs. Stanley also volunteered over 5,000 hours over 14 years working as a Pink Lady at Golden Triangle Hospital. She always enjoyed volunteering, working on craft projects, helping others, and sewing. The family sends special thanks to Drs. Gillespie, Campassi, Boggess, and Henderson for their care and compassion through years of service to Mrs. Stanley. Pallbearers will be friends of the family. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Holcomb, Joe Fant, Joe Thompson, Wade Woods, Gerald Scoggins, and Mildred Witt and the Phileathea Sunday School class.
