Barbara Almond Moore

Barbara Jane Almond Moore September 21, 1915-March 19, 2011 Barbara Moore was born to John Martin and Sadie Frazier Almond in Orielly, MS. She grew up in Shaw, MS, graduated from Shaw High School, and was married in December 1933 to Thomas Luther Moore of Union, MS. They were married for 68 years. Barbara and her husband first lived in Stoneville and Leland, MS, where she wrote a column, Strictly Personal, for the Leland Progress newspaper. The Moores lived in Scott, MS, for most of their married life until his retirement in 1972 when they moved to Greenville, MS. While living in Scott Barbara was a member of the Benoit Union Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. In Greenville they belonged to the First Baptist Church where she taught the Winsome Ladies Sunday School class. At the age of 50 Barbara returned to college, graduating with a degree in Education. She loved teaching. In the late 1960's she was a pioneer teacher in the Headstart Program in the Scott and Benoit communities. For eleven years she taught at Weddington Public School in Greenville. Barbara was an avid reader and writer. She wrote poetry and was an amateur artist. A lover of nature, she taught her children and grandchildren how to fish, row a boat, pack a delicious picnic meal, and appreciate the joys of being outdoors. In 1997 Barbara and her husband moved to Columbus, MS. They lived at Trinity Place Retirement Community and were members of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Moore is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Moore, and her three brothers: John Preston Almond, Joseph Daniel Almond, and Robert Martin Almond, all of California. Survivors include her daughter, Sue Moore Hatcher (Al) of Columbus, MS; her son, Maj. Gen. (ret.) Tom Moore, Jr. (Lee Ann) of Columbus, MS; four grandchildren: Rev. Robert A. Hatcher, Jr. (Melinda) of Hernando, MS; Virginia Hatcher Butler (Joel) of Columbus, MS; Tom Moore Hatcher (Laurie) of Columbus, MS; Malinda Moore Duncan (Jamie) of Tulsa, OK; and ten great grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 22 at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Graveside service will be Wednesday, March 23 at Shaw Cemetery in Shaw, MS, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ron McDougald officiating. Pallbearers will be Joe Butler, Marshall Hatcher, Robert Hatcher, Tom Moore Hatcher, Russell Hatcher, and Jay Duncan, all Mrs. Moore's great-grandsons. Memorials may be sent to Benoit Union Church, Benoit, MS, 38725, or a charity of the donor's choice.
