Alvin D. Porter, age 73, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital " Golden Triangle. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will begin Saturday morning at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 9:00 AM. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 AM with Rev. Steve Lammons officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
The son of the late Vandiver H. and Learon Shepherd Porter, Mr. Porter was born November 11, 1940 in Columbus. He was a 1958 graduate of New Hope High School, and he attended East MS Jr. College. He retired from Omnova as a Maintenance Supervisor after 35 years of employment. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Cynthia Wilkinsons Couples Sunday School Class. Mr. Porter was also one of the founders of the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the board of that organization for a number of years.
Mr. Porter is survived by his wife of 52 years Rebecca Griffin Porter, and his sons and daughters-in-law Brad and Shanna Porter and their children Brittney, Benjamin and Brently
and Greg and Crystal Porter, and their children Dayton and Morgan Porter and one great-grandchild Kara Berryhill, all of Columbus. He is also survived by his sisters Wynelle Davis of Columbus and Shirley Berry of Spanish Fort, AL.
Pallbearers will be Greg Porter, Brad Porter, Dayton Porter, Ben Porter, Shawn Berry and Sherman Berry. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Crane, Jim Kibe, Bobby Brandon and Russell Brown, members of Cynthia Wilkinsons Couples Sunday School Class and former employees of Omnova.
