BOB SMITH Robert N. "Bob" Smith, age 88, of Columbus, MS, passed away June 17, 2011, at Trinity Personal Care. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at 10:00 AM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Chaplain Dean Brooks officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Memorial Gardens of Columbus with full military honors. Visitation will be Monday, June 20, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was born November 4, 1922, in Poplarville, MS, and was a graduate of Beaumont High School. He married Elise McLendon on February 15, 1948. Shortly after their wedding she joined her husband in Japan and they traveled the world as an Air Force family. He proudly and faithfully served his country for over 26 years. They lived in Spain, Scotland, and many places in the United States before returning home to Columbus in 1968. Mr. Smith retired from the United States Air Force at Columbus Air Force Base in January 1970. Surviviors include his sons, Robert Allan Smith of Springfield, VA, and David Kenny Smith and his wife Jeanne of Boerny, TX, grandchildren, Jenny Peshoff of Leesburg, VA, Elizabeth Ashley Smith of Springfield, VA, and Sarah K. Smith of Springfield, VA, and great grandchildren, Madison and Scarlet Peshoff. Pallbearers will be the honor guard from the Columbus Air Force Base. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
