Eleanor Smith Slaughter, age 87, of Columbus, MS, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born on June 13, 1925, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Atkins (Nannie Kate Ward) Smith. She married John Williams Slaughter, Jr., on August 27, 1947. Eleanor devoted her life to the works of the organizations, that she supported passionately, including Delta Gamma Fraternity, the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries, the Junior Auxiliary of Columbus, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Eleanor is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Smith McMullan Langford and Nancy Smith Kennedy (Ken); her neices, Martha Claire Kennedy Fitzner (Arthur), Nan McMullan Wyckoff (Bill), Josie Slaughter Shumake and Cindy Shumake Wiygul (Richard); and great nephews, Thomas Kennedy Fitzner, Smith McMullan Wyckoff, as well as Patricia Lanford Raymond (Don);and a legion of friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Jack; sister, Martha Smith Broach; and her parents. The funeral service will be celebrated on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 4:00 PM. Vistation will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Thomas Kennedy Fitzner, Smith McMullan Wyckoff, Nicholas Ward Wyckoff, Allen Gelder Wyckoff, Thomas Evans Whitaker, Kirk David Hardy, William Gelder Wyckoff, Porter McCarter Roberts and Arthur Richardson Fitzner.
