THOM Frederick Alexander "Fred" Thom, age 92, of Columbus, MS, passed away February 19, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 21, 2012, from noon until 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Thom was born September 26, 1919, in Atlanta, GA, to the late Frederick and Lou Ella Gray Thom. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army Air Corp. and received his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University. Mr. Thom owned and managed Medical & Merchants Collection Service and was a member of the VFW where he served as Chaplain for several years. He was also a Mason and Shriner and member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Thom was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and in addition to his parents, was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Hall Thom, and grandson, Lt. J. P. Fischer, II USN. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Brownlee Thom of Columbus, MS, sons, Fred A. Thom and his wife Diana of Austin, TX, Terry E. Brownlee and his wife Nancy of Columbus, MS, and Larry Brownlee and his wife Peggy of Vernon, AL, daughters, Elaine Thom Dillard and her husband Russ of Monroe GA, Dorothy Thom Fischer of Cleveland, OH, Patricia "Kit" Thom Van Krevel and her husband John of Dublin, OH, Ginger Brownlee Tucker and her husband Wayne of Oxford, AL, and Carol Brownlee Hull and her husband Mike of Murfreesboro, TN, 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Eric Thom, Colin Thom, Berry Thom, Adam Thom, Christopher Brownlee, Kyle Van Krevel, Corey Brownlee, and Mitch Hull. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Gerald Scallions Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.
