Mr. Frates was born April 1, 1940, in Limestone County, Ala., to the late Ernest and Nell Sherman Frates. He was a 1959 graduate of Lee High School and served in the U.S. Army. He owned Discount Gun Shop and Frates Knit and Stitch. He was employed with Immanuel Baptist Church and School and was a member of Sovereign Faith Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Cherritte Eads Frates of Columbus; son, Ernie Frates of Columbus; stepdaughters, Sharon Croft of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kim Ferrell of Foley, Ala., Holly Andrews of Lansing, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jesse Campbell, Taylor Croft, Drew Farrell, Jon Hansen, Caleb Stratton,and Bill Johnston Memorials may be made to Sovereign Faith Baptist Church Bldg. Fund, 7852 Hwy. 12 E., Steens, MS 39766.
