Grover Walter Land

Grover Walter G.W.: Land, age 95, died Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle. Visitation will be at Gunter & Peel, 9:30 - 11:00, on Tuesday, June 17. The service will follow at 11:00 in the chapel, with Rev. Steve Lammons officiating, assisted by Rev. Ralph Windle. and Dr. Shawn Parker. Interment will be at Friendship Cemetery. Mr. Land was born July 8, 1918 in Lowndes County to Aaron Grover and Pinkie D. Land. He attended S.D. Lee High School, and was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Army. After the war, he worked for 38 years with Columbus Light & Water. He left retirement to work for West Realty for a second career. For many years, Mr. Land was an elder and Sunday School Superintendent at Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In his later years, he became a member of Wesley United Methodist. He loved participating in the Keenagers at First United Methodist. Mr. Land enjoyed working in the yard, and he achieved Yard of the Month designation multiple times in the Chamber of Commerce 1980s beautification recognition program. Always interested in civic and community affairs, Mr. Land served as City Election Commissioner for several years. Family was a deep value of Mr. Land. The family from which he came and the family he created were high priorities. Often described as a Southern Gentleman, this gentle man wrote The Life and Times of a Sharecroppers Son, and later wrote A Lifetime of Memories. Mr. Land was also noted for his poetry which he penned for family members and special occasions. Mr. Land was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 72 years, Earline Jones Land; brothers Hamilton, William, and Earl Land; and sisters Annie Eichelberger, Malissa Rector, and Laura Harris. He is survived by daughters Barbara (Leon) McGarity and Debra Debbie (Larry) Duke of Columbus; son Walter Ottley Bubba Land, Columbus; four grandchildren: Tammie (Mark) Stafford, Tiffany (Brian) Custard, Wendi (Ellis) Lachney, all of Columbus, and Andrew Andy (Meg) Duke of Flowood; and five great grandchildren: Mckensi Lachney, Wyatt and Nolan Duke, and Chaney Grace and Catie Custard. Pallbearers are Bill Land, W.V. West, Andy Duke, and Dr. James Hunt. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Robert Howland, Dr. John Whitecar, Dr Jason Dunn, Dr. Norman Ford, Dr. Michael Duckworth, Gene Reed, Don West, Gary Duke, and Friends from First Methodist Keenagers. Memorials may be floral, a charity of choice, or First United Methodist Keenagers, 602 Main St. Columbus, MS 39701.
