KATHY VANCE Katharine Marie Schmidt "Kathy" Vance, age 62, of Columbus, MS, passed away September 25, 2011, at her residence. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 30, 2011, at 10:00 AM at Broadacres United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Thomas officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, September 29, 2011, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Kathy was born in East Orange, NJ, on May 12, 1949, daughter of the late Lawrence F. and Mona Mannix Schmidt. Kathy was a 1967 graduate of Stephen D. Lee High School where she was a member of the marching band. She received her undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University and her law degree from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. Kathy taught at Heritage Academy in Columbus and also in Okolona, MS. She served as an attorney for the Army Corp of Engineers in Mobile, AL, for over 20 years. Kathy was a member of Broadacres United Methodist Church in Columbus. In retirement, she also taught Spanish classes to senior citizens at MUW. Kathy is survived by her daughter, Mona K. Vance, and her companion, Dr. Saleem Ali, both of Columbus, MS, former husband, Stephen Vance of Chapel Hill, NC, sister and brother-in-law, Maren and Dick Rectenwald of Cary, NC, niece and her husband Beth and Dave Byerley of Cary, NC, nephew and his wife Rick and Kara Rectenwald of Raleigh, NC, and her four grand nieces Catie and Rachel Byerley and Samantha and Julia Rectenwald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, L. M. Schmidt, in 2008. Memorials may be made to the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society, P.O. Box 85, Columbus, MS, 39703.
