June Van Tuyl Quinn

June 1, 1924 — July 17, 2014

June Kathryn Van Tuyl Quinn, age 90, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, July 17, from Collegeview Personal Care in Columbus, Mississippi. June Quinn was born in Merritton, Ontario, Canada, on June 1, 1924, to the late Ralph and Mabel Van Tuyl. She lived in Canada until her father was transferred to Fairborn, Ohio, and lived there until she graduated from Bath High School. June and her parents and siblings moved to Aberdeen, Mississippi, after her father was assigned to the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Kaye Field (now Columbus Air Force Base). After passing her civil service requirements, she went to work there, as well. At the base she met the love of her life, Robert L Son" Quinn. They were married December 31, 1944, by the Reverend Douglas Bateman at The First Presbyterian Church and remained married until his death in 1982. Not long after her marriage, her husband was sent overseas and was involved in the invasion of Normandy. While he was gone, for three years June worked and also saved every penny that was sent home. After the war, they finally settled in Columbus and raised four daughters. June was a homemaker until her youngest daughter turned two. She then worked for the Columbus Municipal School System as secretary and office manager at Lee High School for over 30 years. Everyone who worked with her loved her and praised her efficiency, as well as her sweet nature and winning smile. Many a student has said that she saved them from a paddling! Even while struggling from the effects of Alzheimers, she continued to show her sweet personality and impeccable manners. After retirement, June traveled extensively with friends. She went to Europe twice and visited most of the United States and Canada. When she could no longer travel, her loving dog Toby gave her much happiness. Until her illness she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed serving Meals on Wheels and helping with the Braille Bibles at the Lutheran Church. She loved reading, music, playing games and cards, and working crossword puzzles. June was preceded in death by her mother and father; three sisters, Mary Johnson, Irene Anderson, and Coral Lee; brother, Ralph Van Tuyl, Jr.; and Son, her husband of 38 years. She leaves behind to miss her - her daughters: Kathryn Dollar (Butch) and Vana Brislin (Mickey) of Columbus; Becki Parker (Ronny) of Hattiesburg; and Suzy Quinn (George Heard) of Elmer,LA; her seven grandchildren: Kirk Dollar, Rob Dollar, Dustin Dollar, Quinn Brislin, Lee Kathryn Brislin McAnally, Lauren Parker Hartfield, and Ryan Parker; seven great grand children; and special friends Barbara Taylor, Genie Hutchison, and Blanche Young. Funerals services will be held Monday, July 21, 2014, at two oclock at First Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be in the First Presbyterian Church parlor from 12:30 until the commencement of the service. The Rev. Tom Bryson will officiate. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Pallbearers are her grandsons and sons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers are Jay McCrary, Wayne West, Bert Wheeler, Henry Weiss, J.V. Carr, Mac Egger, and Dr. Michael Duckworth. The family requests any memorials be made to the charity of your choice or to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 9681, Columbus Mississippi 39705. The family wishes to acknowledge Jennifer McDavid for her loving care of June in the early stages of her illness and Carolyn Reed, Sophie Hickman, Gladys Morris, Gail Buchanan, Christy Yerby, and Community Hospice for the loving care they bestowed on "June Bug" at Collegeview Personal Care.
