HORTENSE JONES GHOLSON Hortense Altie Jones Gholson, 72, of Columbus, died April 22, 2011, at her residence. Funeral services will be Monday, April 25, 2011, at 2:00 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Sandra DePriest officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 PM on Monday April 25, 2011in the Earline Robertson Room at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Gunter and Peel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Gholson was born in Columbus, MS on March 26, 1939, to the late William L. and Altie McGahey Jones. She was a graduate of Stephen D. Lee High School and attended Sophie Newcomb College and spent a junior year abroad at Bedford College in London, England. She was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women, now MUW, with a degree in sociology. She was queen of the Columbus Junior Auxiliary Pilgrimage Ball in 1959 and went on the be a life member of the Junior Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where on June 3, 1961, she married Hunter Maurice Gholson. He died August 12, 2008. For their 47 years of marriage, they were active in civic and legal circles, in travel, and in enjoying their friends as welcoming host and hostess and loving parents. Mrs. Gholson was also preceded in death by her brother, Fred A. Jones. Survivors include: her son, William Webster Gholson and his wife, Melissa, of Dothan, AL; her daughter, Emily "Mimi" Gholson Roberts and her husband, Tim, of Columbus, MS; her sister-in-law, Beth Jones, and her stepmother, Brown Key Jones, both of Columbus, MS; five grandchildren: James Andrew Gholson and William Hunter Gholson of Dothan, AL, and William Hunter Thomas, Nathaniel Webster Bailey, and Lucas Henry Bailey of Columbus,MS; two nieces: Kirby Bethae Jones Smith of Columbus,MS and Altie Perrin Jones Kibler of Atlanta, GA. The pallbearers will be Marion Smith, John Davis, Dr. James Keaton, Tom Wolford III, Bob Phillips, Stuart Phillips, Todd Gale, Joey Hudnall, Key Blair, George Hazard Jr., and Dale Fulton.
