Charles Edward Ott, age 88, of Columbus, MS, died July 29, 2010, at his residence. Funeral services will be Monday, August 2, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Archie Taflinger and Larry Ferguson officiating. The interment with military honors will immediately follow at Ross Cemetery in Monroe County, MS. Visitation will be Sunday, August 1, 2010, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mr. Ott was born October 2, 1921, in Caledonia, MS to the late Charlie E. and Katie Duncan Ott. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army with Company "D" of the 19th Infantry in the Philippines and was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Ott loved his country and fought so we could preserve our freedom, although it left a lifetime of emotional scars. He retired from Seminole Manufacturing and was a member of the First Christian Church where he belonged to the Freeman Sunday School Class. Mr. Ott was a proud grandpa and was an avid fisherman, gardner, and hunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clayton Ott. Survivors include his wife, Martha Seely Ott of Columbus, MS, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jeff Smith of Dallas, TX, brothers, Albert Ott and his wife Marguerite of Hamilton, MS, and Harry Ott and his wife June of Reform, AL, sister, Stella Stanford of Hamilton, MS, grandson, Kyle Smith of Dallas, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Lloyd Ott, Allan Ott, Dale Ott, John Botes, Randy Frierson, and Bill Delk. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 811 N. McCrary Rd., Columbus, MS 39702.
