Shelby June "Meme" Hitt Oaks, age 68, of Columbus, MS, passed away November 1, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Healthcare. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 4, 2012, at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tony Proctor officiating and Rev. J. Nelson assisting. The interment will immediately follow at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery near Millport, AL. Visitation is Saturday, November 3, 2012, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mrs. Oaks was born June 8, 1944, in Gordo, AL, to the late Samuel Lee and Willie Mae Junkin Hitt. She was a graduate of New Hope High School and Mississippi University for Women. Mrs. Oaks was a member of First United Methodist Church and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Tami Oaks Riley. She was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Pam Sykes and her husband Greg of Columbus, MS, son, Keith Oaks of Columbus, MS, brother, Rayburn Hitt and his wife Iris of Waycross, GA, sister, Shirley Doyle of Columbus, MS, and grandchildren, Matt Sykes, Hunter Sykes, Sarah Katherine Sykes, Tyler Riley, and Sam Riley. Pallbearers will be Greg Sykes, Pete Riley, Matt Sykes, Tyler Riley, Hunter Sykes, and Sam Riley. Honorary pallbearers will be Leslie Smith, Jerry & Jan Horton, Doris Moody, Brenda Bailey, Dr. Christina Collins, Ivy Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church, and the physicians & staff of Baptist Memorial Hospital.
