VALLIE WINDHAM - Vallie Wilma Williams Windham, age 88, of Columbus, MS, died January 17, 2010, at Homeplace Assisted Living. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 21, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Rev. J. Steve Jackson officiating. The private interment will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 20, 2010, from 5:00-8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mrs. Windham was born November 14, 1921, in Yantley, AL, to the late John Spottswood and Ida Lamar Cook Williams. She was a civil service employee at Columbus Air Force Base from the mid 1940's through the early 1950's and retired from Hunter Distributing as a bookkeeper and secretary. Mrs. Windham was a faithful member of the East End Baptist Church for decades where she taught children in Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, Mission Friends, and the church nursery. She was a member of the Maydelle Sunday School Class and WMU, and was active in service projects. Her hobbies included gardening and canning, cooking, sewing, walking, and took great interest in updating far-flung family members on family news. Mrs. Windham was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Windham, Jr., sisters, Louise Williams, Eran McFadden, Elsie Singley, and Beverly Harrell, brothers, John S. Williams, Jr., twins Jim and Howard Williams, and Bryan Lamar "Topper" Williams. Survivors include her sons, Philip H. Windham (Janice) of Chattanooga, TN, and John Paul Windham (Janet) of Waleska, GA, daughter, Judy W. Cockerham (Stephen) of Columbus, MS, grandchildren, Britain Cockerham Nichols (William) of San Antonio, TX, Grant Stephen Cockerham of Columbus, MS, and Ashley Windham of Chattanooga, TN, great grandchildren, Conner Nichols, Weston Nichols, and Reagan Nichols, twin brother, W. W. "Bud" Williams of Meridian, MS, sister, Adolyn "Rip" Devall of Gulfport, MS, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Dillon, Charles Gilliam, Bob Jaudon, Lee Roy Lollar, Dewey Pettigo, Billy Price, Rick Price, Curtiss Pritchett, and Brother Gary Walker.
