Mattie Earline Polk Newman, age 89, of Columbus, MS, passed away March 3, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at 2:00 PM at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Luke Lawson officiating and Dr. Albert Wilkerson and Rev. Jearl Hunley assisting. The interment will immediately follow at Egger Cemetery in Caledonia, MS. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 5, 2014, from 12:30 PM until the time of the service at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Newman was born January 2, 1925, in Lowndes County, MS, to the late Jeff and Lessie Irene Taylor Polk. She was a graduate of Caledonia High School and a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Newman retired from United Technologies and worked at Newman Oil Company for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Newman, son, Larry Wayne Newman, grandson, Benjamin Kurt Foster, grandson-in-law, Mark Foster, brother, Earl Polk, and sister, Lera Mae Bailey. Survivors include her son, Fred Newman, Jr. of Columbus, MS, daughter, Gail Harris of Columbus, MS, daughter-in-law, Deborah Jean Newman of Columbus, MS, sister, Mildred Mason of Steens, MS, grandchildren, Pam Foster, Casey Clark, Christy Adams, Kim Finch, and Kelly Talley, and 9 great Grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Cleveland Lewis, Andy Finch, Rusty Clark, Michael Talley, Daniel Adams, and Trey Freeman. Honorary pallbearers will be members of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
