Martha Elizabeth Whitlock Masterson, 91, died August 19, 2010, at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Northport, AL. Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at the Gunter and Peel Funeral Home in Columbus, MS with Bro. Lavon Haden, Bro. Ron McDougald, Bro. Phillip Crocker officiating. Prior to the services, visitation for the family will be at 9:00 A.M. and friends at 10:00 A.M. also at Gunter and Peel Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Beersheba Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery in New Hope, MS. Mrs. Masterson was born in Caledonia, MS to the late Vincent and Bertha Ticer Whitlock. She graduated from the New Hope High School and then attended business school and worked as a bookkeeper in Decatur, AL. She was married to Robert Preuitt (Buddy) Masterson, a lifetime resident of Decatur, AL until his death in 1977. During her time in Decatur, Martha was active in her Baptist church and in the Glen Iris Garden Club of Decatur. After her husband of 36 years passed away in 1977, she returned to Columbus where she worked for the Columbus Christian School and First Southern Methodist Church. She faithfully attended Ridgecrest Baptist Church and was a founding member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Mrs. Masterson loved God and her family and served others as long as she was able. She was a Godly mother, grandmother, and loyal friend to many and will be missed by all that knew her. During the years 1993 to 1997, she was married to the late James R. Holloway of Columbus, MS. She then moved to Trinity Place Retirement Center until moving to San Clemente, CA in 2003 to be near her son and daughter in law, Bob and Linda Masterson. In 2007 she moved to Northport, AL to be near her sister and brother, Virginia Cox and Don Whitlock. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by three sisters, Mable Adams (Ralph), Vivian Whitlock, Virginia Cox (Tylman), and three brothers, Curtis Whitlock (Sally), Edwin Whitlock (Johnnie), Clayton Whitlock (Norma). Mrs. Masterson is survived by her son, Robert Preuitt (Bob) Masterson, Jr. (Linda), Laguna Beach, CA., one grandson, Robert Preuitt (Rob) Masterson III (Fay), two great grand children, Skylar and Jaxon Masterson of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Don Whitlock of Northport, AL; Zula Whitlock (Edwin) of Columbus, MS, and a hosts of nephews and nieces. Pallbearers will be Gary Whitlock, Mark Whitlock, Bob Cox, Reed Cox, Roy Cox, Steve Cox, Gregg Davidson, Sager Davidson, Brent Davidson, and Jacob Davidson. Honorary pallbearers: Ivy Dean Clements, Doug Crosswhite, Pam Murcell Cullen, Ernest and Eileen DeWitt, Chet and Marjorie Earwood, Beth Haden, Pastor John and Mrs. Katie Hallowell, David and Donna Lawrence, Sandy Masterson, Kenneth and Marie Miller, Barbara Nackerud, Jim Pauley, and his sons, Whitney, Scott, and Duke Pauley, Arthur Stanford, Mildred Whitlock, Verial Whitten, Don and Nancy Youngblood, members of Shiloh Baptist Church in Steens, MS, Aseracare Hospice staff, Forest Manor Nursing Home Station 2 staff, Hospice of West Alabama nurses and staff, and Trinity Place Retirement Center. residents and staff.
