Mildred J. Ward, age 91, of Columbus, MS, passed away February 21, 2014, at Trinity Healthcare. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Gunter & Peel Chapel. The interment will immediately follow at Vaughn Cemetery in Steens, MS. Visitation will be Monday, February 24, 2014, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Mrs. Ward was born June 22, 1922, in Monroe County, MS, to the late James Clarence and Mattie Coleman Green. She was a 1940 graduate of Caledonia High School and was retired from United Technologies. She was a lifelong member of Sulphur Springs Primitive Baptist Church and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Carey B. Shackelford and Hunter Ward, brothers, Robert A. Green, James C. Green, and Harry W. Green, and sister, Eunice Logan. Mrs. Ward was an excellent cook, artist, seamstress, and creative painter. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include her son, James Carey Shackelford of Columbus, MS, daughters, Martha Carroll McCullough and her husband James Lloyd of Stone Mountain, GA, Beth Taylor of Madison, MS, and Cathy Dinkins and her husband Lane of Madison, MS, step daughters, Nancy Bishop of Millport, AL, Jan Hudson and her husband Don of Caledonia, MS, and Lindsey Jordan and her husband Chuck of Caledonia, MS, sister, Lona Finn and her husband Jerry of Yukon, OK, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
