MAX JONES - Maxwell "Max" Lee Jones, age 62, died on May 11, 2013, from complications due to renal cell cancer. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013, from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. A graveside memorial service will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery. Max was the son of the late Chester L. Jones, Jr., the late Maxine Kestenbaum Jones, and Betty Clyde Jones of Columbus, MS. He was born in Columbus on January 17, 1951, graduated from S. D. Lee High School in Columbus and in 1973 from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Max was designated a Naval Aviator and retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander in 1985. After the Navy, Max pursued a career as an airline pilot. He flew for Pan American World Airways until they ceased operations in 1991, and was flying for Federal Express, as a MD-11 Captain, at the time of his death. Max is survived by his wife, Judi A. Sands of Virginia Beach, VA, and his children, Jeremy H. Jones, Jessica Jones Miller (Ricky), Lindsay A. Sands, and Sean L. Sands (Nicole), all of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Lee Jones Hackett of Columbus, MS, Carri Jones Chester (Greg) of Clinton, MS, Douglas Hutchinson of Flora, MS, Clyde Hutchinson (Angie) of Millstead, IL, Mrs. Dudley Hutchinson, III, of Madison, MS, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also Bampa to his two wonderful grandchildren, who lit him up whenever they walked into the room, Kai Maxwell Miller and Isabella Rose Sands. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Mark Jones and Dudley Hutchinson, III. Max would want you to know that he loved his family and cherished his friends. "Guard and guide the men who fly..."
