MARGARET BEARD - Margaret Miller Beard, age 90, of Meridian, MS, formerly of Columbus, MS, died April 21, 2010, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, MS. Funeral services will be Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 3:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Rev. David Strain officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will also be Sunday, April 25, 2010, one hour prior to the service at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mrs. Beard was born September 2, 1919, in Cave Springs, GA, to the late Claude Hargrove and Louise Height Miller. She spent most of her life in Columbus, MS, where she graduated from Lee High School and attended the Mississippi University for Women. Mrs. Beard retired from the United Way of Lowndes County after thirty years as office manager. Prior to her work with United Way, she worked for seven years with the YMCA of Columbus. She was a member of Northpointe Presbyterian Church of Meridian and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Merritt Beard, Sr., brother, Robert Miller, and sister, Louise McDaniel. Survivors include her sons, Henry "Merritt" Beard, Jr. of Meridian, MS, and James B. Beard and his wife Digna of Milton, FL, brother, Claude Miller, Sr. and his wife Sara of LaGrange, GA, granddaughter, Cathy Guest and her husband Jeremy, nephews, Billy Beard, Robert Miller, and Claude Miller, Jr., nieces, Becky Beard Morgan and Kay Beard Calaway, and a special part of the family, Cris Orr of Meridian, MS, and her daughter, JorD'an Orr of Ridgeland, MS. Pallbearers will be Bud Phillips, Larry Pope, Charlie Cole, Stanley Milward, Will Milward, Lee Roberts, Bobby Harper, and B. A. Atkins.
