Donald Wade Burns, Sr. Donald Wade Burns, Sr. age 87, joined his one true love on the morning of Sunday, September 28, 2014, from The Windsor Place in Columbus, MS. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 30, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Memorial Funeral Home, with Dr. Ed. Knox officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Columbus, MS. In addition to his parents Mr. Burns was preceded in death by his beautiful bride of 56 years, Hilda Maudie Sanders Burns, his two brothers, William and Lee, his three sisters, Dorothy, Lyda and Betty Sue. Mr. Burns was born April 7, 1927 in Sunflower County, MS to the late Lyda Wade Moore Burns and William Lee Burns. He was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church. Mr. Burns was a very devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Was loved and endeared in the hearts of many in Columbus. He was very active in the community and proudly served as a member of many organizations in the area. He has served as a school board member for the Lowndes County School District, a board member for the Columbus Shrine Club, a board member for the Mississippi Wildlife Federation, a board member for the Lowndes County Wildlife Federation, a board member of the South Gate Sewer System, just to name a few. He started his career as a very young gentleman by serving our country honorably in three wars. Served with the US Navy in WWII, reenlisted with the US Air Force where he served in Korea and later in Vietnam. His main function was to train dogs to sniff out bombs in tunnels. He had one tour in Germany then Korea, he came home to marry, went back to Germany, where he started his family, he was transferred to Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS, then he was transferred to Columbus Air Force Base in the late 1960's where he was a security police with the ACT at Columbus Air Force Base where he trained guard dogs. Retired. Worked Civil Service at Columbus Air Force Base in Corrosion Control, then worked for contract companies at the Columbus Air Force Base in Corrosion Control where he finally hung up his hat and retired completely. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved nothing more than spending time with his lovely wife cruising back country roads looking for bargains at yard sales. Survivors include sons, Donald Wade Burns, Jr. of Columbus, MS, Randy Burns of Natchez, MS, Glen Burns and wife Yvonne of Columbus, MS, grandchildren, Heather (Nikki) Burns Ellis and her husband John, Douglas Wade Burns, Alex Bailey Burns, great grandchild Mason Ellis. Pallbearers will be John Ellis, Curt Gjerde, Lee Hulett, Steve Ruth, Alan VanValkenburg, Max Watson.
