Jean Thompson

Mrs. Jean R. Thompson, age 91, died Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Trinity Healthcare. Services will be Monday, October 6, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Memorial Funeral Home. Dr. Shawn Parker will officiate, assisted by Rev. Curtis Bray. Interment will follow in Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 5, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home. The daughter of the late Charles and Ellen Mustin Robinson, Mrs. Thompson was born April 16, 1923 in West Point, MS. She was a graduate of West Point High School and attended business college in Columbus. She began a forty-four year career with the City of Columbus in 1944 as secretary in the Secretary/Treasurer's office. For one year she served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the city, the first female to hold that position. When she retired in 1988, she had the most seniority of all city employees. She was a member of First Baptist Church and George Shalles' Sunday School Class. She always enjoyed spending time with her three grandsons and their families, especially her great-granddaughter. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother J.L. Tuttle, two sisters Verlie Tuttle and Ann Quarles and her husband V.W. "Pinky" Thompson. After her retirement, she enjoyed working in her flower garden, baking, and most importantly, spending time with her grandsons. These three young men, whose lives were enriched by her guidance and love, affectionately called her Granjy. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Lee Ellen and Terry Ford, three grandsons Jack Ford (Christine), Andrew Ford (Sarah) and Will Ford and one great-granddaughter Charlotte Ford. Pallbearers will be Lee Younger, Curtis Younger, Tom Younger, Brian Price, Jason Price and Dennis Brownlee. Her family wants to thank the nurses and staff at Trinity Healthcare for the love, affection, and wonderful care that they gave to Mrs. Thompson. Memorials may be made to Trinity Healthcare, 230 Airline Rd., Columbus, MS 39702 or the donor's favorite charity.
