Geneva Cunningham

September 2, 1920 — December 20, 2014

Geneva Alpharetta Hurt Cunningham, age 94, of Columbus, MS, died December 20, 2014 at her daughter's home in Olive Branch, MS. Visitation will be Tuesday December 23, 2014, from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home; a graveside service will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Cunningham was born on September 2, 1920, in Ripley, MS to the late Rile and Mary Hurt. She grew up in Falkner, MS and was baptized into the Presbyterian Church in Falkner. She was a lifelong Presbyterian wherever her travels took her. Those travels began in earnest on February 1, 1945, when she married Walter J. Cunningham of Lancaster, SC. They were married for over 50 years; 24 of those years were spent in the U.S. Air Force on numerous bases. She made a loving and warm home wherever she went. She moved to Columbus in July 1959. She devoted her life to her husband and children. She loved dogs and horses and had a knack with talking to them and getting them to understand or pretend to understand. She also had a knack for gardening, particularly roses, which she loved. Mrs. Cunningham was a member of Eastern Star and the final Cunningham to be a member of the Ann Pamela Cunningham Chapter. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by both of her sisters and all six of her brothers. Survivors include: Son: Walter J. Cunningham, Jr. and wife Phyllis of Madison, AL Daughter: Patricia C. Walker and husband Mike Walker of Olive Branch, MS Granddaughter: Melanie W. Berryhill and husband Thomas Berryhill Granddaughter: Marcie E. Walker Memorials may be made to Columbus Air Force Base-CPOF,464 Harpe Blvd Columbus, MS 39710.
