James W. " Jimmy" Garton, age 69, died Saturday January 24, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital -Golden Triangle. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27, 2015, beginning at 1:00 PM at Annunciation Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 3:00 PM at the church with the Rev. Father Robert Dore and Father Gerard Hurley, celebrants. Burial will immediately follow in Friendship Cemetery. Jimmy was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 21, 1945 to the late James Carl Garton and Lucille Wallace Garton. He is survived by his wife, Paulette Bernheim Garton of Columbus; children, Carl (Robin) Garton of Columbus, Lynn (Daniel) Hooker of Greenville, MS, and Natalie (Tripp) Ward of Meridian, MS; his sister, Jane (Ron) Smith of Columbus; grandchildren Jimmy Garton, Hannah Kate, Reed, Campbell, and Julia Hooker and Emma and Hamp Ward; mother- in- law, Lyn Bernheim of Gulfport, MS; and a large extended family. Cootie was loved by many and known for his famous dance moves. The Mayor of 9th Street North was often seen rocking and waiving to friends; the outdoorsman we all knew has proven he was a worthy catch, and his jolly ole self was often seen spreading smiles and warm wishes around the Christmas Season.
