MITCHELL SCOFIELD John Mitchell Scofield age 94, died Monday February 16, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbus. Services will be held Saturday February 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating, burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the funeral home. Mr. Scofield was born on on August 7, 1920 in Columbus to the late Almond and Annie Elizabeth Lewis Scofield. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Columbus and the Dr. S.B. Platt Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of S.D. Lee High School and attended Clarke College, Memphis State, and the University of Tennessee, Memphis campus. During WWII, he was commissioned a 2nd LT. in anti-aircraft artillery at Camp Davis, N.C. and later went to infantry school at Ft. Benning, GA. He served in the states, Cebu Island, The Phillipines, and received the Combat Infantryman Badge for duty in Okinawa. He also served at headquarters, Sendai, Japan, where he prepared military personnel for their return to civilian life back in the states. He then went into the Army Reserves, and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. After returning to civilian life, he was employed at the Ford Motor Company in Memphis until it closed. He then worked for Wilson & Savage Development Company as their finance controller and project administrator for overseas building projects. He worked and lived in the Bahamas, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Curacao, Aruba, The Antilles, Casa Blanca Morrocco, Marrakech and Kaduna in Nigeria. The company constructed the American Embassy in Lagos, Nigeria. He retired and lived in Daytona Beach, FL for 10 years until moving back home to Columbus in 2000. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, O.D. Scofield, and Fred Scofield, his sisters, May Sumrall and Margaret Scofield. Survivors include: Nieces: Kay Scofield Vaughn (Henry), Steens, MS Martha S. Jones (Howard), Hamilton, MS Margaret S. Dempsey, Jacksonville, FL. Nephew: Noel Sumrall, Columbus, MS Great Nephews: Steven Roe, Memphis, TN Andy Vaughn, Steens, MS Hank Vaughn, Steens, MS Great Niece: Amy V. Knittig, Columbus, MS and a host of other nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
