Melton Lawrence "Mel" McCarty, Jr., age 51, of Columbus, MS, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 3, 2015, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. A private family interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 6, 2015, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mel was born September 30, 1963, in Columbus, MS, to Melton L. "Mac" and Helen Sansing McCarty, Sr. of Columbus, MS. He was welcomed by his three sisters, Cynthia, Kimberly, and Diane. What joy this baby boy brought to everyone's lives! Mel graduated from Heritage Academy in 1981 and received a BS degree from the College of Business and Industry from Mississippi State University in 1985. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and was a Phi Mu Sorority Big Brother. During his youth, he excelled at baseball and made several local and State All Star teams. He also played football, and was selected for the Lowndes County Public-Private School All Start team as an offensive guard. Mel entered the boy scout program at an early age and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while in high school. Mel accepted Christ at a young age and joined First Baptist Church of Columbus where he was active in all the youth programs, including being selected as a member of the Proclamations Choral Group. As an adult, an extremely meaningful experience for Mel was participating in the Emmaus Walk. Mel was one of the youngest individuals to obtain his Real Estate license in Mississippi at age 18, and received his broker's license at age 21. After college, Mel went to work with his father. Mac was so excited to have his son working by his side. Mel became a successful businessman. He served as President of the Columbus Realtors Association and also served as President of the Columbus Kiwanis Club. Mel leaves behind his daughters, Hannah Spivey McCarty and Elizabeth Ann McCarty of Tupelo, MS, along with his parents, Mac and Helen McCarty of Columbus, MS, sisters, Cynthia McCarty Hutchinson and her husband John of New York, NY, Kimberly McCarty Davis of Daphne, AL, and Diane McCarty Jackson and her husband Bert of Ridgeland, MS, numerous nieces and nephews, three great nephews and many loving cousins and friends.
