George Lee Dyson

October 4, 1946 — March 7, 2015

My little brother, George Lee Dyson, went to meet and rest in the comfort of the arms of his Lord and Savior shortly before 5:00 AM this morning. He was 68-years old. It was George's wishes that he be cremated and his ashes scattered on a favorite place of his childhood, an island in the lake here on our ancestral home place. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Thank you for all the love you have shown George through his many days of pain and sickness. Your emails and fond remembrances made his illness much more bearable. George Lee Dyson, Sr., aged 68, went to his Lord and Savior around 5:00 AM March 7, 2015 at Darlington Oaks Hospice, Verona, MS after a 7-year heart and stroke disability. He was born in Columbus Hospital on October 8, 1946 to the late Owen F. and Irene Bowlin Dyson and was a lifetime resident of Columbus. A memorial service will be held in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 officiated by the Reverends Tony Proctor and Anne Russell Bradley. Visitation will be in the Fellowship Hall one hour prior to the service. He is survived by his daughter Dawn Renee Dyson- Merritt of Chattanooga, TN, sons George Lee Dyson, Jr. and Steven Tracey, both of Columbus, grandson Kaleb Merritt of Chattanooga, and brother John Dyson of Columbus. George was a graduate of S. D. Lee High School, Class of 1964, and attended Mississippi State University where he majored in Psychology. His earlier years were spent in farming and construction. He later served as Coordinator of Flood Control for Lowndes County until he was disabled by heart attacks and strokes. During his disabilities, his artistic nature came forth in his love for woodworking through the hand carving of spoons, bowls, walking canes and religious crosses and in handmade knives that he sold at various trade shows and powwows. He spent several years traveling around the Southeast making and exhibiting his wares until his deteriorating health prevented it. Even after he became a resident of the nursing home, he continued to work on crosses and bead work. It wasn't unusual to visit him and find him sitting in his wheelchair covered in sawdust working on some wood project, or doing some fine bead work. George will be sorely missed by his family and the many friends he made through the years. Most will miss his sincere caring for his fellow man, his ready smile and his wonderful sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in George's name to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 32, Columbus, Mississippi 39703 or a charity of your choice We would offer special thank you to the staff and nurses of Windsor Nursing Home and to the staff and nurses of Darlington Oaks Hospice for the tender and loving care that they heaped on our loved one at his most vulnerable time.
