ALICE NICKOLES Alice Ludene Austin Nickoles, age 86, of Columbus, MS, died March 29, 2015, at her residence. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her brother and sister. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at 12:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Hurt, Rev. Steve Lammons, and Rev. David Honeycutt officiating. The interment will immediately follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 31, 2015, from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM at the church. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Nickoles was born in Lowndes County, MS, on April 18, 1928, to the late Vannoy A. Austin, Sr. and the late Mary Ussery Austin. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Sunday school teacher, and poll worker at the Rural Hill Voting Precinct. She was an avid gardener, expert seamstress and reweaver, and loving grandmother. She was also an integral part of Nickoles Dirt Construction and owner of Columbus Speedway, a local dirt track built by her husband, James, in 1962. She spent her life serving God, her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, James R. Nickoles and brother, Vannoy Austin, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Terry Nickoles and his wife Judy, Randy Nickoles and his wife Mary, Gary Nickoles and his wife Leigh, and Jerry Nickoles and his wife Carolyn, daughter, Beverly Smith and her husband Gary, all of Columbus, MS, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brother, Everett Austin, sister, Gladys Mann, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brian Manchester, Bradley Nickoles, Wes Nickoles, Tim Nickoles, Chad Nickoles, and Michael Nickoles, all of Columbus, MS. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Building Fund of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 1383 Pleasant Hill Rd., Columbus, MS, 39702.
