Martha Phinizy Segrest, 69, died at Trinity Place, Columbus, MS on August 17, 2015. She was born on December 6, 1945 in Athens, GA, to Laura Ann Phinizy and Robert Taylor Segrest. Martha attended St. Gertrudes School in Washington, DC and The Devereux School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. She lived and worked in Pennsylvania and Atlanta, GA until her retirement in 2000. Martha was known for her kindness and generosity to all. She was a creature of habit and her friends knew of her keen streak of stubbornness. However, all of these traits helped Martha face many obstacles in her life, and she did so with grace and bravery. She was proud to call Athens, GA her hometown, loved the Atlanta Falcons and Braves whether winning or losing and followed the Georgia Bulldogs even after moving to Mississippi. Martha also loved movies and kept a list of what she had seen with her ratings (all were rated "super"). She also loved to read and take care of her cat, Zoe. Martha was a proud Democrat and Episcopalian, but stayed away from political conversations, as she knew she was in the minority. Martha was the beloved friend and sister to Anne Segrest Freeze (Terry). She is survived by Anne and Terry as well as her brother, Bob (Jennifer), nephew Taylor Segrest (JaJa) and niece Laura Barrett Segrest. Martha is also survived by the many new nieces and nephews she "adopted" when Anne married Terry in 2005. They, in turn turn, "adopted" Martha as their new Aunt Martha. A graveside service wjll be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Oconee Hills Cemetery, Athens, GA, with Father Robert Solomon officiating. Memorial contributions are welcome to your charity of choice.
