Walter D. "Pete" Johnson, age 83, of Columbus, MS, passed away October 30, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 1, 2015, at 3:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Dr. Bill Hurt officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Johnson was born June 20, 1932, in Lowndes County, MS, to the late Walter and Ressie Owens Johnson. He retired from United Technologies. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by two sisters, Janette Williams and Maxine Ruffin. Survivors include his son, Billy Johnson and his wife Elsie of Columbus, MS, daughter, Nancy Upton and her husband Darryl of Columbus, MS, sisters, Margean Ashcraft of Columbus, MS, and Ann Camp and her husband James of Columbus, MS, and grandchildren, Linsey Upton, Jake Upton, Crystal Yates and her husband Van, and Dusty Johnson. Pallbearers will be Mike Ruffin, Chad Ruffin, Jake Upton, Ben Williams, Joe Ashcraft, and Greg Smith. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, MS, 39213.
