Dorothy Nan Shaw Rickett, 74, formerly of Coffeeville and West Point, MS, passed away January 6, 2016 at the Arrington in Columbus, MS. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 17, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Coffeeville, MS with visitation thirty minutes prior to the service. A private, family graveside service will follow at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Yalobusha County.
Born in Water Valley, MS, she was an honors graduate of Mississippi College and received her teaching certificate upon her graduation. She then traveled abroad, where she studied French. Throughout her career, Mrs. Rickett taught English, French and Art in West Point, Greenville and then Holly Springs, MS. She received numerous Teacher of the Year awards for her performance. In addition to her parents, Guy Cephas Shaw and Mattie Dawkins Shaw, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Rickett, and her sister, Laucene Shaw Clements.
After retirement, she moved to Columbus to be closer to her sons.
She is survived by her sons James Lee (Jim) Stafford, Jr. (Carol Anne) , and Stewart Shaw Stafford (Molly), of Columbus, MS; grandchildren, Jena Stafford Oakes (Ken) of Little Rock, AR, James William (Will) Stafford of Flowood, MS, John Isaac, Sally Shaw and Shelby Price Stafford and great-grandson, Wyatt Woodson Oakes. Mrs. Rickett is also survived by her brother, Guy Dale Shaw of Yalobusha County and sister, Charlene Shaw Torbert (Bob) of Nashville, TN. She leaves to mourn her several beloved nieces and nephews.
