Byron Ted Lockhart, age 91, passed away at his home in East Columbus following a lengthy illness on January 25, 2016. Ted Lockart was born, November 14, 1924 in Beaverton, AL. He was the youngest of four sons born to Earnie and Florence Lockhart of Beaverton, AL who later moved to Caledonia, MS. He is preceeded in death by his former wife, Jessie Rae Moore Lockhart of Caledonia, his mother and father, Earnie and Florence Lockhart, three brothers Roland Lockhart , James Edsel Lockhart both of Pascagoula, MS, and Fred Lockhart of Caledonia, MS, two sisters; Fern Juanita Ipock and Iris Lockhart.
Ted is survived by his current wife, Emma Jean Morris Lockhart. Ted and Jean have resided on Meadow Drive in East Columbus for the past 17-1/2 years. Jean and Ted raised many garden vegetables in their back yard. He is survived by one grandson Billy O'Mary of Caledonia, MS and one stepson, Bill Jackson of Pensacola, Florida and a host of neices and nephews.
Ted was an avid gardner and raised all kinds of garden vegetables, enough to give to friends and family and even sold many of their home grown vegetables at the Farmer's Market in Columbus. After a lengthy hospital stay Jean worked tirelessly to water, hoe and harvest Ted's last garden where he had raised pole beans, butter beans, tomatoes, squash, tomatoes and okra.
Ted and Fred Lockhart farmed in Caledonia for over 43 years raising cotton, soybeans, corn and beed cattle. It was often said of the Lockhart Brothers, when they would get their farming equipment out and ready for spring planting, the neighborning farmers would follow suit, as they had vast knowledge of the soil and climate and they influenced many of the younger farmers in the area. Ted loved farming and said it was not a job but something that he was passionate about doing. After retirement, if one asked Ted if he was enjoying retirement, he would say, "retirement is not all it is cracked up to be. " "If I'm still here next year, I'm gonna pay somebody to let me work." Ted loved animals and enjoyed bird hunting. He always had bird dogs that he loved and took good care of. Even after he was unable to hunt anymore, he had dogs that he would adopt from the local pound and give them a good home.
Ted Lockhart was a kind, hard working man who was a good neighbor and friend to all. Ted will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
