Sherry Harmond

October 10, 1946 — March 12, 2016

Sherry Marmon Harmond, age 69, died peacefully at home in Steens, MS, on Saturday, March 12, 2016, following a long battle against cancer. Services will be held on Tuesday, March 15, at 2:00 PM at Gunter and Peel Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Jonathon Speegle officiating. The interment will immediately follow at the family plot in Friendship Cemetery . Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.

Mrs. Harmond was born in Oakland , California on October 10, 1946 to World War II Naval flier Elmer L. Marmon, Jr. and Mildred Dickson Marmon. She graduated from Lee High School in 1964 and attended Mississippi University for Women. After her marriage in 1965 to Charles Harmond, she worked for many years as business manager for The Commercial Dispatch.

After ending her work career, Mrs. Harmond devoted her time to volunteer work. She served as a Cub Scout den mother, president of the Heritage Academy Band Boosters and the Lee High School PTO. She was a life member of Columbus Junior Auxiliary. She served as chair of the National Association of Junior Auxiliary (NAJA) scholarship committee, and as 1997/98 NAJA national president. While president, she traveled several thousand miles and visited every NAJA chapter. She was active in her church, Central United Methodist Church and its successor, Covenant United Methodist Church , serving as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school leader, Sunday school superintendent, and annual conference delegate as well as singing in the church choir for almost forty years.

Mrs. Harmond loved knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She especially enjoyed spending time with her three sons, their spouses, and her nine grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and his brother, Tom, and attending school activities of her grandson, Wilson, who lived with her and her husband throughout high school.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her sister, Becky Coward (David) of Columbus and bother-in-law, Chester Dowdle of Alpharetta, GA.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; sons Edward (Terry) of Duluth, GA and his sons Wilson, Thomas and Noah; Bill Harmond (Paula) of New Albany, MS and their children Alana, Karsyn, Austin and Jordan; and Josh (Shelly) of Springdale, AR, and their sons Joseph and Elijah. She also leaves brothers-in-law Thomas Harmond (Linda) of Mathiston , MS and John Harmond (Sue) of Wigggins , MS , David Coward of Columbus as well as sister-in-law Mildred Dowdle of Alpharetta , GA.

Pallbearers will be Clif Swedenburg and members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class at Covenant UMC: Bob Herron, Bob Ferguson, Rodney Glover, Eddie Hayward, Sammy Townsend, and Jesse Gonzalez.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr, Amber Borden, the nurses of the Baptist Memorial Hospital Infusion Center , and caregivers of Sanctuary Home Hospice, Valarie Miller, Kayla Hodges, and Shanta Selvie.
