Joel J. McAdams, age 94, went to be with his Lord Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Trinity Place . He arranged to have his body donated to the Body Donation Program at the University Of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson . Gunter & Peel Funeral Home has been entrusted with his services. Visitation will be Friday, April 8, 2016 from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Memorial service, with military honors, with Rev. Tommy Gillon officiating and Dr. Breck Ladd assisting, in the chapel of Gunter & Peel Funeral Home.
Mr. McAdams was born June 15, 1921 in Marshall , MO to the late Earl David and Lucille Wingfield McAdams. At the age of twelve, his family moved to Mountain View , MO , where he completed his education. He and his wife moved to Columbus eight years ago and became very active residents of Trinity Place . He represented the military in the Veterans Day Program at the courthouse in November, 2015.
Mr. McAdams was a World War II veteran, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign in the Americal Division. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He married Virginia Hornbeak in Poplar Bluff , MO on February 16, 1951, and they enjoyed sixty five years of married life together. After twenty five years of employment, he retired from the United States Postal Service in Memphis , TN. Then he enjoyed traveling, woodworking, gardening, his church work and his family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, three sisters and twin great-grandsons.
He is survived by his wife Virginia H. McAdams of Columbus, his daughters and sons-in-law Diana and Bill Pruett of Columbus and Rebecca and Joe Blount of Arlington , VA and his son and daughter-in-law Joel and Phyllis McAdams, II of Morristown, TN. He is also survived by five grandchildren Drew Pruett ( Taylor ) of Madison , MS ; David Blount and Kevin Blount, both of Arlington , VA ; Milly Tunnell (Daniel) of Johnston City , TN and Susie Ramsey (Doug) of Morristown , TN and four great-grandchildren Emmy and Patrick Pruett and Benjamin and Annabel Tunnell.
