REBECCA JENKINS
Rebecca Bush Jenkins age 96 died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Rocky Ridge Retirement Home in Birmingham AL. Services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Becky Davis officiating, burial will follow at Rowan Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Jenkins was born on Saturday, April 15, 1919 in Caledonia , MS to the late Henry Washington and Annie Lee Smith Wells. Mrs. Jenkins family was early settlers in Mississippi , her great grandfather, Washington Wells purchased the family farm in 1832 and it remained in the family until 1991. She was a 1937 graduate of S.D. Lee High School in Columbus, MS. She attended business college in Birmingham , then worked for Picard Testing Laboratories, Sunlife Assurance Co. of Canada in Birmingham , and transferred to Boston , MA during WWII, and Birmingham Southern College.
In 1942 she married Leon Charles Picard, he died in 1944 from an accident while on duty in Hawaii during WWII.
After the war she married John Rufus Bush from Tuscaloosa , AL. Mr. and Mrs. Bush moved to Greensboro , AL , where Mr. Bush was in the lumber business. The remained there for 10 years. Later they moved to Birmingham where Mr. Bush was a lumber broker for several firms in the southeast and Canada . Mr. and Mrs. Bush were married for 46 years and upon retirement moved back to Mississippi, settling in Caledonia, and finally on the Wells family property on Hwy 12. Mr. Bush died in 1991. The Bush’s were members of St. Paul ’s Episcopal Church in Columbus , and Mr. Bush was a member of the Vestry. Mrs. Bush was a member of the Earline Robertson Guild. She was also a member of the DAR, UDA, Lowndes County Library, S.D. Lee Harrison Home, and a Docent in the annual Columbus Pilgrimage.
In 1996 she married Harry Jenkins. The Jenkins lived in Sylacauga , AL , were they were members of the Mignon Bridge Club. Mrs. Jenkins belonged to the Presbyterian Women of the church, and the Good News Sunday School class. She was also a member of the Matrons Study Club, the Marble Valley DAR, and she and Mr. Jenkins were members of the Sylacauga County Club. Mr. Jenkins passed away in 2007.
In addition to her parents and her husbands she was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Elizabeth Wells Hopper, her grandparents, Nimrod and Julia Anne Barrentine Wells, R.E. and Nancy Ellen Gernigan Smith, step-mother, Annie Brooks Wells, step-daughter, Peggy Jenkins Howard, and step-grandson Cale Howard.
